Volunteer Work for Wellbeing Week

JULY 05, 2022

As part of Wellbeing Week 2022, Chess offered staff the opportunity to support their communities by getting involved in group volunteering initiatives across their local districts.

The first session was held at Warnham Nature Reserve, near Chess’ site in Horsham. Running in conjunction with the Countryside Warden Team at Horsham District Council, the team helped remove Himalayan Balsam, an invasive species found along riversides. Himalayan Balsam outcompetes native plants and reduces wildlife diversity. The most effective method of removal and to control its spread is by hand pulling.

The Wokingham office volunteered with First Days. First Days are a Wokingham based charity that support local families with young children. They have also been working with Ukrainian families to make sure they have what they need when they arrive in the UK. They are currently working on their new Elevate Centre, which will be opening in the town centre in the next month. The centre has a toy library, a school uniform "shop", a clothing room for the Ukraine appeal and community kitchens. Our people helped by hanging clothes, putting furniture together and cleaning. Anything to help the centre get finished!

The team in Plymouth are yet to take part in their big beach clean and litter picking session with Clean Our Patch. Clean Our Patch is an independent CIC that works with councils across Plymouth to improve urban and rural areas for the community. They’ve already cleaned up a whopping 6.5 tonnes of rubbish so far this year, and they show no signs of stopping! Our people’s action and hard work will make a positive impact on the local community and environment.

Thank you to all of our volunteers across the business for your hard work, you are truly remarkable.
